Whatsyourprice.com launched in 2010, by entrepreneur Brandon Wade. Wade is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of InfoStream Group, a company for online dating. Wade is also known for his famous sugar daddy dating site, SeekingArrangement. Wade also launched MissTravel.com in 2012, a site designed to pair “generous” travelers with “attractive” travelers, who would like to see the world but cannot afford it. In 2015, Wade also launched OpenMinded.com, a dating site designed for stigma free monogamous relationships. Wade’s dating sites have received great criticism, and some have been compared to escort services. Wade however claims that his websites are not intended for escort services, and escorts are not allowed on his websites.
Brandon Wade received his Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering, in 1993, from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), on an Overseas Merit Scholarship awarded by Singapore’s Public Service Commission. He later received his Master of Business Administration, in 1995, also from MIT. Wade later worked for a few fortune 500 companies, including General Electrical and Booze Allen.
Wade created Whatsyourprice, with trying to facilitate dating altogether. He was inspired by the difficulty that getting a first date can be, such as, getting to know a person by messaging them, worrying if the date will show up, etc. To eliminate such difficulties, he created Whatsyourprice, to assure that the date will take place by ensuring a monetary incentive. As Wade puts it, “everyone has a price”. Whatsyourprice is a dating site where members bid on dates, and the other member either accepts, declines, or counteroffers the bidding amount. Once the bidding amount has been accepted, the date takes place, and the “attractive” member that accepted the bid gets paid by the “generous” member on the actual date.
Whatsyourprice services both heterosexual and homosexual members. Thirty five percent of the members are college female students, looking for extra money to get them through their studies. Both men and women can get paid to go on dates. However, women will dominate getting bids compared to men. It can take men much longer to get bids, where women get bids often. The “generous” member, or the member paying for the date, is only required to pay for the first date. If a second date occurs, the “generous” member is not required to pay again. “Attractive” members that get paid for the date will receive payment by the “generous” member on the actual date. Whatsyourprice does not assist with the exchange of payment between its members.
Whatsyourprice has become a very popular dating site since it was first launched nine years ago. Whatsyourprice reports the following about its members:
|Total Members||More than 3,000,000|
|Total bids on first dates||More than 4,850,700|
|Average bidding amount||$125|
Whatsyourprice is available in the U.S., UK, Canada, and other international countries. Most of the members are from the U.S. (455,000 members), with the UK coming in second, and Canada coming in third. Whatsyourprice has 500,000 active weekly users.
Creating a Profile
Creating a profile through Whatsyourprice is somewhat different from other dating sites, but still fairly easy. To start, the user has to enter their email address or their google account information, and create a password to sign up for an account. Users then have to indicate whether they are a man or a woman, if they want to make bids or receive bids on dates, and if they are interested in meeting men, women, or both. This allows Whatsyourprice to provide users with accurate matches. The user then has to create a username and indicate their location and birthdate.
Whatsyourprice will send the user a confirmation email that has to be verified before completing the users’ profile. Other dating sites typically send the verification email at the end, when the user has completed their entire profile first. Once the user verifies their email address, they can view other profiles at a glance but not in depth. In order to view the profiles in depth the user has to return to their profile settings complete their profile.
In order to have a completed profile, users are required to indicate information about their body type, height, and indicate the type of relationship they are looking for (dating, friendship, long-term, discreet affair, casual, and mentorship). Other optional but not required information that users can share about themselves is their education, whether they have children, if they are smokers, if they drink, occupation, and income. Users can also describe themselves in brief sentences to let other users know a little bit about themselves, along with writing about what their ideal first date would be like. The user can change or update any of this information in the future, if they decide to. Completing these sections really helps other members get to know a little bit about who you are and what you are looking for in a compatible date.
The user must also upload a photo of themselves; you can choose to make your photo public or private. Whatsyourprice has to verify the users’ photo and this typically take less than one hour or up to one day to let the user know whether their photo is approved or denied. Once the user completes their profile and uploads a photo of themselves, they will be able to connect with other members. Whatsyourprice encourages its members to upload at least three photos of themselves, to have a successful profile.
Using the Site
Whatsyourprice is easy to use and maneuver. Their layout and display is straight to the point, with only six tabs on top of the users’ profile. The tabs provide users instant access to the home button, menu, searching members, their favorites list and who has favorited them, offers they have received or sent, and conversations they have had with other users.
When you first log into your profile page, you can instantly view the newest members that are near you, your recent activity, and if you have new alerts on your profile’s dashboard. You can also see who has viewed your profile, only after your profile has been completed. Whatsyourprice does not have match suggestions or algorithms to pair you with a match, like other dating sites. Whatsyourprice does however, provide you with matches based on what you indicated in the beginning, such as, you are looking for a man, woman, or both, and you want to receive or pay for bids. You can also use filters to find specific matches.
Whatsyourprice allows you to view other members’ profiles and photos for free, along with adding members to your favorites list. Messaging and making bids requires credits that members have to pay for. Messages and chatting features can only be available once an offer has been accepted or unlocked. Bidders can bid at a minimum of $5 and there is no maximum bid. To begin your dating experience through Whatsyourprice, members can purchase a minimum of 100 credits for $50.
Finding a Match
Whatsyourprice provides two different ways to find matches through the users’ profile. The first way is through their home button, where it provides members that are nearby. The second way is through their search icon, where the user can narrow the search by distance or by using additional filters such as:
- Looking for
- Body types
- Profile Keywords
At a glance, the other members’ profiles display their username, age, location, and whether they are online or not. Once the user clicks into another members’ profile, the user is able to make an offer. Making an offer is the first step to initiate conversation with other members. The user can also see when the member was last active and they have the option to favorite them. The user can also view the members’ demographical information that every user is required to answer such as body type, height, whether they have children, smoke, drink, the education level, occupation, income, and their interests. Users can also see additional details that members decided to share about themselves and what their ideal first date would be. Users can also view all the photos the members made public. Keep in mind, that you must first have a completed profile in order to view other members’ full profile. This includes a photo and required details about yourself. Without those details, users will not be able to fully view other members’ profiles.
Whatsyourprice is only available through their website. They currently do not have a mobile app. If the user wishes to utilize their profile on their mobile device, they must do so through their mobile web browser.
